Purpose: The laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is becoming the standard treatment option for renal cell carcinoma. However, the laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is not yet popular in Korea. We assessed the outcomes of laparoscopic and open radical nephrectomy performed by a single surgeon.
Materials and Methods: We reviewed 29 laparoscopic radical nephrectomies and 12 open radical nephrectomies performed for suspected renal cell carcinoma between June 2005 and July 2007. The clinical parameters were assessed through medical records retrospectively.
Results: Twenty-eight of the 29 patients underwent laparoscopic procedure were completed laparoscopically via the transperitoneal approach. One laparoscopic procedure was converted to an open procedure due to an injury of the renal vein. The laparoscopic procedure needed a shorter hospital stay and analgesics medication period than the open procedure. With the increasing of the laparoscopic procedure, the operation time and complications of the laparoscopic procedure were equal to that of the open procedure.
Conclusions: The laparoscopic radical nephrectomy can be performed as safely as the open radical nephrectomy. The open procedure will be replaced by the laparoscopic procedure in localized renal cell carcinoma.
